ECD operates four rotary drilling rigs and two cable tool drilling rigs that cover a wide range of drilling services.
Our rigs are capable of drilling 100-600 diameter casing to depths of up to 250 metres. ECD is Canterbury’s trusted drilling company because we pride ourselves on our high standards of workmanship and comply with all industry standards to ensure a top quality and long-lasting result.
DOMESTIC/LIFESTYLE WELLS
ECD has considerable experience in drilling domestic wells for household, garden irrigation and stock water use. These wells are usually 150mm in diameter. The majority of domestic wells that are drilled in Canterbury do not require a consent from Environment Canterbury.
The water supply is one of the most important considerations when beginning the process of setting up a lifestyle block. Because of our extensive database, ECD can provide an educated estimate of the depth of well that will be required and expected flow rates. A free on-site consultation is offered and this can be done soon after a block of land is purchased to discuss the siting of the well in relation to other planned building work.
Only quality seamless line pipe is used for drilling wells. We offer the option of internal lining of the well with stainless steel if required. ECD also uses stainless steel wedgewire well screens to ensure maximum yield and a long-lasting result.
The wells are sealed at the ground surface with bentonite and concrete according to ECAN requirements. ECD can provide a complete water supply system for your lifestyle block once the well is completed.

IRRIGATION/LARGE DIAMETER
For large-scale irrigation wells or deep potable water supplies, ECD has the equipment and expertise to undertake any project. These wells are usually 250-300mm in diameter and can be telescoped to depths of up to 250 metres. Our ability to install 400mm surface casing allows for the installation of sanitary seals as required for municipal drinking water supplies. ECD can use air rotary drilling or cable tool drilling as required on any particular job and has large hydraulic casing jacks for pulling back casing and screening wells. The company employs experienced welders and only accepts very high standards of workmanship. ECD have a large range of submersible test pumps capable of up to 70 L/s for step drawdown and constant rate aquifer testing, along with electronic flow monitoring. ECD takes pride in our Health and Safety record and can provide full H&S documentation. The company has achieved Sitewise Green accreditation.
SMALL DIAMETER/LIMITED ACCESS WELLS
ECD have a purpose-built track-mounted drilling rig set up to drill small diameter (100-125mm) wells for domestic use at sites which have groundwater available at depths of less than 30m. This rig is especially useful for drilling wells for the irrigation of lawns and gardens on developed properties with limited access.
This method causes minimal disturbance and is proving to be a cost-effective option for people who would like their property to be summer-safe regardless of community supply constraints during high demand periods.

ENVIRONMENTAL/GROUNDWATER MONITORING BORES
ECD is experienced in the installation of bores for the piezometric monitoring of groundwater levels as well as bores for periodic water quality testing. These bores are often lined with PVC but can be lined with stainless steel if required. Our range of drilling rigs can provide the solution for any site constraints and depth requirements.

REDEVELOPMENT/DEEPENING OF EXISTING WELLS
Maintaining your well is very important and can avoid ongoing issues with well performance. An underperforming well may benefit from redeveloping in order to bring the quality and quantity of water it provides back to original levels. This can be done using compressed air or mechanical surging (cable tool rig) which will remove any sediment that may be restricting flow through the well screen. ECD have various sized mobile compressors available for this purpose. It is a relatively straightforward process and time spent on this process can achieve significant gains and greatly prolong the lifespan of the well. The submersible pump will be removed from the well and can be cleaned and tested to make it sure it is still performing optimally at the same time. Riser pipes can also be checked and replaced if necessary. Larger diameter wells can sometimes be deepened by the installation of smaller diameter casing inside the well which can then be drilled to a deeper aquifer.

TEST PUMPING
Often wells will require aquifer tests to provide up-to-date data on the flow capabilities of the well and to determine any interference effects on neighbouring wells or streams. This is useful as part of the Assessment of Environmental Effects that is required for any ECAN resource consent application to take or use groundwater.
Aquifer testing includes a step drawdown test to determine the optimum pumping rate for a well. The well is pumped at 3-4 different flow rates for an hour each while the water level is regularly measured.
A constant rate discharge test involves pumping the well at a single flow rate for a prolonged length of time (24-72hrs) while monitoring the water levels in the well itself and nearby wells to determine the zone of influence. ECD have a range of submersible test pumps available for test pumping that are capable of flows of up to 70 L/s. Generators are also available for situations where a power supply is not yet connected.
CABLE TOOL DRILLING
Some projects and locations may require the well to be drilled by a cable tool rig. This slower drilling process is less invasive and causes minimal disturbance to the geology. In areas of very high flowing artesian aquifers or for deep wells, the cable tool rigs are often used to finish drilling or for screening following on from the rotary rigs. ECD operates two cable tool rigs for drilling, developing and test pumping of wells of varying size or depth.

HEALTH & SAFETY COMPLIANCE
ECD is firmly committed to the provision of a safe and healthy workplace and this is at the forefront of all services provided by this company. The company has in place a comprehensive H & S Management Plan and can provide full documentation. In recognition of this, ECD has attained ‘Sitewise Green’ status again this year.
